A SYSTAMATIC REVIEW OF THE MEDICINAL PLANT-PARIBHADRA (ERYTHRINA INDICA LAM.)

ABSTRACT
World Health Organization (WHO) stated that approximately 80% of world‟s population in all developing countries believe in traditional system of medicine for their primary healthcare needs at major levels.[1] The drug Paribhadra (Erythrina indica) is an important drug which has been in use since Vedic period. In Rigveda, Samhitas and Nighantu, its medicinal use has been mentioned. The plant Erythrina is used as anti-inflammatory, diuretic, hepato protective, analgesic, anti-convulsive, and galatagogue. In Kerala and Karnataka, the stem bark and leaf paste of Erythrina indica is used to increase breast milk production. Various Ayurvedic preparations of this drug is widely using in different conditions. The present review article has been designed to elucidate data on pharmacological properties, chemical
constituents, traditional uses, Ayurvedic formulations & details of the drug from various Samhitas, Nighantus and Contemporary texts.
