REVIEW OF LEPA KALPANA W.S.R. TO SHARANGHDHAR SAMHITA

ABSTRACT
Background: Sharanghdhar Samhita is an authentic text for this subject and was written in 14th century by Shri Acharya Sharangdhar. It contains clear definition of pharmacological terms and also method of preparation of all types of recepies. These are simple easy to prepare and effective which makes the practice easy, therefore this book is considered as the handbook for Ayurvedic physicians. In Bhaishajya Kalpana application of Herbal drug externally known as Lepa. Lepa Preparation is the topical medicament meant for external application to the skin or mucosal membrane. The topical Preparation includes Lepa, Upanaha, Malhara etc. out of many bahya Kalpana. Lepa kalpana has
due importance in Ayurvedic system of medicine. Lepa Kalpana are used in different conditions like inflammation, wound healing, wound clearing and various skin disorders. Aim & Objective: To critically study the Review of Lepa Kalpana with special reference to Sharangdhar Samhita. Design: In this study Ayurvedic books were thoroughly searched to compile information about Lepa kalpana. Result: Lepa kalpana is a Bahirparimarjana type of Aushadha kalpana. The significance of Sharangdhar samhita is that it has indicated the use of herbal drugs along with Rasa dravyas. for ex. In Vyangahar lepa, the use of Swarnamakshik bhasma is indicated. In Romotpadak lepa, Hastidant mashi is used. In Swarjikadi hemashri lepa – Sajikshar, Yavakshar, Tilakshar is used. This signifies the uniqueness of Sharangdhar samhita. Conclusion: Lepa kalpana is Bahirparimarjan type of Aushadha kalpana. The reference for the Lepa kalpana is available in many classical texts. The first reference for the external application has been mentioned in Charaka Samhita “Aragwadhiya Adhaya”. In addition Sharangdhar Samhita has stated the Lepa vargikaran according to Dosha and Karma Vargikaran.
