THE EFFECT OF SUBCLINICAL MASTITIS ON PHYSIOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF BOVINE MILK IN SHANDI AND BAHRI LOCALITIES, SUDAN

ABSTRACT
In Sudan clinical and subclinical mastitis leads to a substantial drop in milk production which may reach 20%. Clinical mastitis can be detected by visual examination of both milk and mammary glands as any abnormalities can be detected easily. Diagnosis of subclinical mastitis presents a problem due to unapparent signs; however several screening tests are in use besides culturing methods. The study was aiming for detection of changes in chemical component of mastitic milk in Bahri and shandi localities in Sudan. Also the study aimed for isolation and identification of aerobic bacteria implicated in dairy cattle mastitis by using conventional methods. In this study 7 (42.5%) out of 40 raw milk samples collected from Bahri locality, had a SCC score higher than 600,000 cells/ml and 13 (32.5%) out of 40 raw milk samples collected from Shandi locality, had a SCC score higher than 600,000 cells/ml. In this study water, protein, fat and lactose were within the normal ranges in all the thirty mastitic milk samples collected from Bahri and Shandi localities. In this investigation a total of 18 bacterial isolates were obtained from 17 mastitic milk samples collected from Bahri Locality. Staphylococci represented the predominant bacteria (27.8%) isolated from mastitic milk samples compared to other bacteria Ps. aerogenosa (16.6%), M. luteus (11.2%), Str.uberis (11.1%), B. subtilis (11.1%), E. coli (11.1%) and K. pneumoniae (11.1%). In this investigation a total of 12 bacterial isolates were obtained from 13 mastitic milk samples collected from Shandi Locality. Staphylococci represented the predominant bacteria (33.4%) isolated from mastitic milk samples compared to other bacteria Ps. aerogenosa (16.7%), M. variens (16.6%), E. coli (16.7%), K. pneumoniae (8.3%), B. subtilis (8.3%), and Str.uberis (8.3%).
