Firas N. Majid*, Ali M. Mohammed* and Wael M.Khamess*

ABSTRACT

Backgrund: Intestinal obstruction is common and dangerous surgical emergency, it`s a second to abdominal trauma as a cause of surgical emergency. The etiology and pattern of obstruction vary in different countries The diagnosis is usually straight forward based on clinical and radiological findings. Methods: This is a prospective clinical study of patients with intestinal obstruction admitted to causality unit of Al Muqdadiya Hospital surgical department between June 2011 and June 2012. Data collection was started immediately after patient`s arrival at causality unit, recorded variables were age, gender, resident and occupation of patients, the time between the onset of symptoms and arrival at causality unit were recorded. Results: Majority of patients were in fifth decade 21(28%), the highest rate found among patients between fourth and sixth decades 51 (68%),the male 43 (57.33%) female 32 (42.33%) ratio 1.3:1 ,past surgical history 43 (57.33%) patients had abdominal surgery 15 (34.8%) less than 6 months. Conclusion: Lower abdominal and pelvic surgeries lead to obstruction more often than upper gastrointestinal surgeries, this preponderance of lower abdominal surgeries to produce adhesions that result in obstruction is thought to be due to the fact that the bowel is more mobile in the pelvis and tethered in the upper abdomen The most common cause of intestinal obstruction is band and adhesion, while the second cause is hernia, third cause tumor, fourth cause intussusceptions, and valvulas of sigmoid colon is the fifth cause.
