ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENT IN SULAIMANI (KURDISTAN REGION), IRAQ AN EPIDEMIOLOGICAL STUDY

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Injuries, especially traffic accidents are so important causes of death, disability, hospital expenses, economic damages to the society, so that World Health Organization selected them as the main subjects for investigation and research. Patients and method: We have done an epidemiologic study about organs injury in road and traffic accidents. This is a descriptive study carried out on patients with road and traffic accident injuries, admitted in Sulymani Teaching Hospital, during January, 1st, 2010 to April, 30th, 2010. Data were collected retrospectively using a data collection form including demographic information, time of accidents, position of the victim,
type of analgesia used, anatomical site of injuries, according to AIS90 and severity of head trauma according to Glasgow coma scale (GCS),type of management, morbidity and mortality. Data were processed by SPSS 16.0 and are shown in tables and figures. All the traffic accident’s patients were 986, only 350 of them (which our research dealt with) admitted to hospital while 636 treated as outpatients or refused admission. Result: Male to female ratio about 3:1. Most of patients were 25-44 years age group (37.7%).Car driver was the more position of the victim in our patients (33.7%) followed by pedestrian (33.1%). Occurrence of traffic accidents increased at evening. Most of the patients received analgesia (96.6) and the most common type was Paracetamol (78.3%) then NSAID (8.6%).Head and neck were the most common injured part of body (61.7 %,) followed by limbs and pelvis (52.0%). The morbidity was (8.0%) of the patients; while the mortality was (3.65%). Conclusion and Recommendation: A traffic accidents are an important public health issue in Sulaimani governorate, we recommend conducting other studies focusing on risk factors in details, and considering accident prevention in local decision making.
