ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the wound healing potential of the whole plant Sida cordata Burm. F Borss. The excision and incision wounds were induced in 30 Wistar albino rats of either sex grouped into 5 groups each containing 6rats. Group 1 was treated with 1% Silver sulfadiazine ointment, Group 2 was treated with 5% ointment of ethanolic extract of Sida cordata, Group 3 was treated with 10% ointment of ethanolic extract of Sida cordata, Group 4 with 5% ethanolic extract of Sida cordata + 10% Oleic acid ointment and Group 5 with 10% ethanolic extract of Sida cordata + 10% Oleic acid ointment. The ointments were applied once daily till complete wound closure occurred. Various parameters such as epithelialization period,
percentage wound contraction, hydroxyproline content, histopathology were evaluated in excision wound model and tensile strength was determined in incision wound model. At the end of study, the wound healing activity of the 5% ethanolic extract of Sida cordata ointment was found to be effective as the standard 1% Silver sulfadiazine ointment statistically. The 5% EESC ointment with 10% Permeation enhancer showed an activity similar to the Standard ointment and others showed lesser activities. Conclusion was made as the ethanolic extract ointment of Sida cordata at a lower concentration effectively stimulated wound contraction; induced quicker epithelialization, angiogenesis, elevated hydroxyproline content and increased tensile strength in wounds.
