MANAGEMENT OF CHRONIC CONSTIPATION THROUGH AYURVEDA – A CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT
Constipation can occur at any age, and is more common among individuals who resist the urge to move their bowels at their body's signal. This often happens when children start school or enter day care and feel shy about asking permission to use the bathroom. That’s why constipation is one of the common prevalent diseases in paediatric age group and it is one of the main reasons for increased parental cocerns. It occurs as a result of the only an independent disease; it is also a complication of some diseases. Constipation is one of the common problems in pediatric age group responsible for both physical and psychological. Constipation is defined as infrequent passage of stool with pain and difficulty, or delay in defecations. Constipation can be
correlated with vibandh as both the terminologies have similar features like purishnigraha (obstruction of stool), pakvashya shoola (pain abdomen), parikartika (pain during defecation) etc. Managment of constipation revolves around correcting the underlying cause, dietary modifications and behavioura training. An 8 year old male patient was admitted to the In Patient Department of Kaumarabhritya, Rishikul campus UAU Haridwar uttrakhand, with complaints of difficulty in passing motion regularly and associated with passage of hard stools once in 12 to 15 days. These complaints were persisting for the past 6 months. This condition can be understood as Vibandha, Panchakarma treatments including Abhyanga, Swedana and Basti with some medicine course of 7 days. There were significant improvements in the condition of the patient. Later, he was discharged with medicines to be continued at home.
