OROPHARYNGEAL CANCER, ITS AYURVEDIC APPROACH AND MANAGEMENT W. SR. TO GALARBUDA

ABSTRACT
Cancer is a much talked about, thought about and worked upon subject. Cancer is an emotional word associated with disease, dying and death. 12% of the death in world happens because of cancer. In developed countries cancer is the second leading cause of death, next to cardiovascular disease. In developing countries cancer ranks third as the cause of death and accounts for 9.5% (3.8) million of all deaths. Its high time to expose the vast medicinal treasure of Ayurveda that can be a good remedy for cancer. Galarbuda is one of the 18 gala rogas mentioned by Vagbhata in
Ashtangahridaya. It has been considered as a grave emergency by the acharyas as it leads to blockage of path of pranavayu (A.H U.S 21/100). Galarbuda or oropharyngeal cancer is the most common head and neck carcinoma. In the world 1, 23,000 new cases are added each year; estimated death from oropharyngeal cancer is 7900 per year. In India 0.5 % of carcinoma is accounted for by oropharyngeal cancer. Hence it is relevant to study in detail about galarbuda. This paper is an attempt to study galarbuda in detail and to chart out an effective management for galarbuda.
