ABSTRACT
In a tropical country like India, people suffer from seasonal disorders. Be it extreme cold at some places and extreme hot at some places, people have to come up with both. The stressful condition arises out of hot climate and its outcome such as boils, prickly heat, sun stroke etc. People of the yesteryears were familiar with the ways of managing these conditions. Using sandal as external application was one among these remediable measures. When going through the Siddha literatures, the authors of this paper found a formula ‘Santhana Kuzhambu’
consisting of sandal and Borneo camphor, meant for both internal and external applications. Since no scientific studies have been carried out in this formula, the authors decided to test its efficacy through anti-microbial sensitivity studies. Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, E.coli, Proteus species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Trichomonas vaginalis were the organisms tested. The test drug ‘Santhana Kuzhambu’ exhibited sensitivity against Pseudomonas aerugionsa.
