Nermeen Nabeel Abuelsoud*, M.Sc., Ph.D. Lecturer

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Providing pharmaceutical care services with a high quality became a widespread standard in health care systems. To enable the next generation of pharmacists to meet these new challenges and allow them to drive the profession actively forward, new teaching methods should be initiated. Team – based learning (TBL) is a new teaching strategy which can help in achieving these goals. Objective: This study aimed to compare students’ performance in the professional practice externship module before and after initiation of team-based learning. Materials and Methods: The Study was conducted in the Faculty of Pharmacy in the British University in Egypt. The traditional way of teaching was replaced by the TBL strategy. This teaching strategy was implemented in semester I, academic year 2018-2019 for the professional practice externship module. Results: There was a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001) in grades A to D for the professional practice externship module overall results in the academic year 2018/2019 compared with the previous academic year (2017/2018). Conclusion: TBL approach initiated throughout this current study participated successfully in raising the students’ performance and grades in the professional practice externship module and it will be very promising in the future of the Egyptian pharmacy education.
