Abstract

EVALUATION OF BIRTH OUTCOME AMONG WOMEN WITH PREGNANCY PROBLEMS IN KARBALA CITY

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The objective of this study is to describe the maternal characteristics, pregnancy complications, and birth outcomes among women with pregnancy problems and finding the relationship between pregnancy problems and some variables. Methods: A case control study of a target sample of 394 mothers with their newborns were selected and consisted of (194) mothers diagnosed with pregnancy problems as a study group and (200) mothers for the control group were free from pregnancy problems, they collected in the delivery room at the maternity hospital in Karbala city during the period from 4 may, 2019 to 1 July 2019. A questionnaire was designed for this purpose, which included two parts consist, demographic information of others and birth outcome. The data were collected through the use of questionnaire, interview, and observation technique for both mothers and their newborns. Data were analyzed by applying descriptive statistical analysis and inferential statistical analysis as Mann-Whitney U test, Z-test, independent sample t- test. Results: of the study indicated that the mean age of mother 27.08 ± 6.91 years for the study group and 27.71 ± 6.55 years for the control group and both of them were employee, have university educational level, have previous delivery, The highest percentage of pregnancy problems is anemia 39.69%, followed by 10.82% for hypertension. The results of testing indicating that there are a highly significant different at P < 0.01 were obtained at the items of age of mother, occupational level, mode of delivery, gestational age, neonatal status ,and newborn body weight with a significant different at P < 0.05 were obtained at the items of Apgar score in 1 and 5 minutes and neonatal abnormalities, while A non-significant different at P > 0.05 were reported with the educational level and previous delivery between different of the two groups according the pregnancy problems to birth outcomes through the equality of variance and equality of mean value's parameters with percentile transformed scoring. Recommendations: The study recommended the need to provide comprehensive care for pregnant women and health education about complications of pregnancy, and the need to visit antenatal periodically to discover and treat these complications.
