ABSTRACT
Gastroretentive dosage forms were retained in stomach for longer period of time and improving its bioavailability of drugs. Lamivudine was developed by two approaches i.e. Floatation and Bioadhesion. The both unique system drug delivery remains in gastric region for a longer period of time. Floating – Bioadhesive tablets of Lamivudine were developed to enhance drug release in sustained manner and improving its bioavailability. Tablets were prepared by Wet granulation process using polymers HPMC K4M, HPMC K15M and Carbopol 934P were evaluated for Buoyancy studies, swelling index studies, water uptake studies, drug content, Exvivo Bioadhesive time and strength studies and Invitro drug release profile. Sodium bicarbonate was used for effervescent purpose to improve buoyancy of polymer concentration and contribution in the drug release from tablet. Results indicated that
all formulations follow square root kinetics and formulation F12 shows best sustained release and bioadhesive properties.
Keywords: Lamivudine, Floatation-Bioadhesion, Exvivo bioahesive time and strength, sustained release.
