ABSTRACT
Many of the wild medicinal plants used in the formulations in the Ayurvedic medicines in India have been listed as endangered species. The use of plant based medicines in today‟s world has quadrupled in recent times. In the present project investigations have been carried out to test for the presence of the phytochemicals present in the plant parts of the following plants Janakia arayalpathra, Artocarpus hirsutus, Calophyllum apetalum Willd., Terminalia orenulata, and Dorstenia indica. Analysis of the phytochemical compounds have been done using the Gas chromatography and Mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The plant extracts showing a positive test for the presence of saponins included the stem, leaf, flower extracts of the plants V. amygdalina,
stem extract of Artocarpus, root, leaf and stem extract of Calophyllum apetalum, stem extract of Janakia arayalapathra, root, leaf and stem extracts of Dorstenia indica and Terminalia crenulata. GC-MS report showed the presence of the compound furfuran methanol, and cyclopentenone in Janakia aryalpathra, and presence of Nanadeconone in Artocarpus hirutsus.
