KALYANAKA GHRITA – AN EFFECTIVE REMEDY FOR BRAIN AGEING

ABSTRACT
Background: In the field of geriatrics the age over 75 years is designated as elderly. With the advancement of their ageing they have to deal with various aspects like diseases, nutritional issues and decline in the capacity of functioning of major organ systems. Their physical and emotional dependency on others may affect the quality of their life. This may lead to development of psychological conditions like anxiety, depression, dementia etc. A brain undergoes changes in the molecular, cellular, structural and functional level. In such conditions, Medhya Rasayana like Kalyanaka Ghrita, Panchagavya Ghrita etc can be advised to slow down the rapidity of Brain ageing. Aims and Objectives: To evaluate the probable mode of action of Kalyanaka Ghrita in aspects related to brain ageing. Methodology: The probable
mode of action of Kalyanaka Ghrita in aspects related to brain ageing is done by evaluating the Rasapanchaka of the 28 drugs enlisted in the classical reference of Kalyanaka Ghrita mentioned in Charaka Samhita under the context of Unmada Chikitsa. Discussion: Kalyanaka Ghrita is a Medhya Rasayana which possess multi dimentional mode of action ranging from its utility in Unmada chikitsa to Pumsavana Karma.The compound formulation is proven to exhibit its action on alleviating Shareerika as well as Manasika Doshas. Conclusion: Kalyanaka Ghrita can be advised for Nityasevana to control the rapidity of brain ageing. Further studies can be considered to establish the same.
