EFFECT OF METFORMIN ON VITAMIN B12 IN DIABETES PATIENTS

ABSTRACT
Background: Metformin mostly prescribed first line therapy in diabetes mellitus patients because it decreases both morbidity and mortality. Vitamin B12 is an crucial micronutrients required for optimal hemopoetic, cardio-vascular, neuro-cognitive function. V it B12 deficiency has been a sought-after eventuality in metformin treated diabetic patients. Metformin treatment both duration and dose, is kindred with increased risk of V it B12 deficiency. Metformin is
associated with a high prevalence of biochemical B12 deficiency. It adjacent with diverse clinical manifestation ranging from impaired memory, dementia, delirium, peripheral neuropathy, subacute combined degeneration of spinal cord, megaloblastic anemia and pancytopenia. The intention of this review article is to analyze the impact of metformin on the frequency of V it B12 deficiency.
