ABSTRACT
The aim of our research work was to isolate a biomaterial from the
seeds of Ricinus communis and evaluate its mucoadhesivity as well as
mucoretaintability. The biomaterial was isolated from the seeds of
Ricinus communis by an economical process. It was subjected to
various physico-chemical tests as well as spectral analyses like IR, 1H
NMR, DSC, SEM and elemental analysis. The mucoadhesivity of
biomaterial was screened by shear stress method and rotating basket
method. Further its mucoretaintability was determined by MS
mucoretaintability apparatus. The biomaterial exhibited inbuilt
mucoadhesivity and mucoretaintability, so it can be used as a novel
excipient for transmucosal drug delivery.
Keywords: Mucosal drug delivery, labial mucosa, intestinal mucosa, Ricinus communis.
