ABSTRACT
Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of alcoholic extract of Terminalia
bellirica Roxb.(TBAE) in dextran sulfate sodium induced colitis
Method: Experimental colitis was induced by giving mice drinking
water ad libitum containing 3.5% (w/v) Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)
for 7 days. Standard drug and extract administered concomitantly. The
animals were sacrificed 24 h after the last dose administration &
Disease parameters were studied. Result: Disease activity index,
macroscopic score, microscopic score, MPO and colon length were
showed recovery of disease with significant effectiveness from 7th, 5th
& 4th day in 100 mg/kg dose, 250 & 500mg/kg dose and Mesalamine (100 mg/kg dose)
respectively. Conclusion: TBAE shows effectiveness in dose dependent manner. TBAE 500
mg/kg provides better protection and is comparable to the standard drug- Mesalamine.
