ABSTRACT
Metal ions as their natural salts are characterised by antibacterial activity. The present study aims to evaluate the antibacterial property of 3 different metal ions; Copper, Nickel, Silver (Cu2+, Ni2+ and Ag+) of different concentrations, by Agar- Gel disc diffusion susceptibility method on bacterial strain; Escherichia coli. Minimum inhibitory concentration of each metal ion is estimated by carrying out the study with sufficiently diluted samples. The susceptibility of the bacterial strains is determined by the morphological characteristics of a zone of clearance/ inhibition zone appearing on the agar plates inoculated with the specific bacterial culture and impregnated with a disc of suitable
sample dilution. Experiment results significantly relate the metal ion employed, with the strain. These results observed in this study predict the mechanism of inhibition and to determine the antibacterial properties of all the commercial and naturally occurring compositions containing the studied ions.
Keywords: Copper, Escherichia coli, Metal ions, Nickel, Silver.
