MELAS - AN EVIDENCE BASED TREATMENT MODALITY

ABSTRACT
MELAS syndrome is a multi-organ disease with broad manifestations including mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes. Management is largely symptomatic and are based on the use of antioxidants, respiratory chain substrates and cofactors in the form of vitamins. Some of the most frequently prescribed agents include coenzyme Q10, L-arginine, B vitamins, and levocarnitine.
