ABSTRACT
Background: preterm birth is the leading cause of newborn deaths and also the leading cause of death in children under 5years of age there is wide spread suspicion that subclinical infection is a common accompaniment and cause of preterm labour. Ferritin is an acute phase reactant and it increase during inflammation. Aim: To detect whether the serum ferritin level could be used as a predictor in women with preterm labour or premature rupture of membrane. Study Setting: This study conducted at Salahaddin general Hospital. Department of
obstetrics and gynecology from March 2017 toAugust 2017. Study design: A case- control study. Patient and method: The study group consisted of 34 with preterm labour and 66 with premature rupture of membranes. The control group consisted of 75 subjects matched with the study group for hemoglobin, serum iron and serum iron binding capacity who did not have preterm labor or premature rupture of membranes. Serum ferritin levels were assayed in these groups. Results: Mean serum ferritin levels in patients with preterm labour and preterm prelabour rupture of membranes were 146.70±139.40 ng/ml and 154.01±39.46 ng/ml respectively. The mean serum ferritin level in control group was 78.80±8.40 ng/ml. The difference was evaluated was found to be statistically significant. Conclusion: Serum ferritin level is significantly increased in pregnant women with preterm labor and premature rupture of membranes.
