ABSTRACT

Objective: The main objective of the research is to identify the chemical constituents of Zingiber officinale and evaluate their activity as a whole. Methods: The extract was prepared by Soxhlet apparatus using dichloromethane, hexane and ethyl acetate (1:1), methanol, methanol and dichloromethane (1:1) as solvents. Preliminary identification of phytochemicals constituents was performed which showed the presence of terpenoids, Flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids. The EC50 values from DPPH were found to be 357.209 μg/ml, 207 μg/ml, 283 μg/ml, 236 μg/ml and 177.67μg/ml for dichloromethane, hexane and ethyl acetate, methanol, methanol and dichloromethane and ascorbic acid respectively. Similarly, antibacterial activity was determined by using disc diffusion method. For these three different human pathogens named E.coli, S. aureus, P.aeruginosa were used. The antibacterial activity of different extracts was found to be close to standard ciprofloxacin and dichloromethane showed maximum antibacterial activity than others (15mm zone of inhibition). Result: Hexane and ethyl acetate, extracts showed the more antioxidant activity (EC50 value: 207.602mcg/ml) than others which can be attributed to the presence of tannins and Phenolics along with other compounds and comparatively similar to the ascorbic acid and also it also showed antibacterial activity similar to the ciprofloxacin and comparatively saying dichloromethane extracts showed the maximum antibacterial activity (15mm zone of inhibition). Conclusion: As a conclusion, chemical constituents of Zingiber officinale has clearly indicated the anti-oxidant and anti-microbial activities.

Keywords: Zingiber officinale, extraction, phytochemical screening.
