ABSTRACT

Gastroretentive drug delivery system (GRDDS) is a novel drug delivery system which has an upper hand to conventional drug delivery systems owing to its prolonged retention ability in the stomach and thereby increased bioavailability of drugs which mainly get absorbed from the proximal part of the intestine.[1] Since, drugs for peptic ulcers need to be retained in the stomach for longer time; GRDDS can be one of the preferred novel drug delivery approaches. A formulation consisting of Zingiber officinale, Glycyrrhiza glabra and Curcuma longa having proven activity against peptic ulcers was formulated as floating beads. The synergistic effect of these herbal drugs provides more therapeutic effect in comparison to individual therapy. The floating beads were formulated using Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose K15M (HPMC K15M) and sodium alginate in the optimized ratio of 9:1 and were evaluated for floating time, lag time, water reuptake capacity and dissolution. The gastric retention time was found to be approximately 8 h by in vitro test.

Keywords: Gastro retentive drug delivery system, Zingiber officinale, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Curcuma longa, floating beads, Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose K15M (HPMC K15M).[2]
