ABSTRACT
Herbal shampoos are the cosmetic preparations uses traditional Ayurveda herbs meant for cleansing the hair and scalp just like the regular shampoo. They are used for removal of oils, dandruff, dirt, environmental pollutions etc. The major reason of using shampoo is to remove the unwanted build-up of sebum in the hair without stripping out much so as to make hair unmanageable. Specialty shampoos are available for people with dandruff, colour-treated hair, allergic persons, and infants and young children. Shampoos are probably the most widely used personal hair care product for cleansing hair and scalp in our daily life. A shampoo is basically a solution of a detergent containing suitable additives for other benefits such as hair-conditioning, lubrication, medication etc. Now-a-days many synthetic, herbal, medicated and non-medicated shampoos are available in the market but popularity of herbal shampoo among people is on rise because of their belief that these products being of natural origin are safe and free of side effects. It is difficult to prepare an herbal shampoo using a single herbal drug that would be milder and safer than the synthetic ones, and at the same time would compete favourably with its foaming, detergency and solid content. We, therefore, considered to formulate a pure herbal shampoo using traditionally and commonly used plant materials for hair washing in Kerala. This study was designed to formulate an antidandruff herbal shampoo and evaluate, compare its physicochemical properties with the marketed shampoo in search of a safe and effective herbal cosmetic product.
