Abstract

CLASSIFICATION, DIAGNOSIS AND EPIDEMIOLOGY OF DIABETES MELLITUS TYPE I IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

ABSTRACT

Background: Diabetes Mellitus type I has a distinctive Classification, Diagnosis and epidemiological pattern. Objective: To obtain Classification, Diagnosis -epidemiological characteristics of DM type I, and compare it with other studies in Iraq and other countries. Patients and methods: Over period between of february 2018 to the 30th of october 2018 studies done in jalawla general hospital 25 newly diagnosed children of DM type I aged below 15 yrs, 25control cases who had no chronic illnesses of same age and sex were studied for some of Classification, Diagnosis and epidemiological characteristics, like residence, history of exposure to infections, consanguinity of parents, family history of DM type I, weight, height and body mass index, at onset of the diagnosis. Results: The study showed that males incidence is more than females. And there are two peaks of ages at diagnosis, one at 5-7 years and the other at age of puberty. The family history was positive in 40% of cases, sixty four percent of case had positive consanguinity of parents, thirty one (62%) of cases had positive history of recent infections (upper respiratory tract infections or other infections) thirty (60%) of cases live in urban area, sixteen (32%) of cases their weights were below 5th percentile. while height of 14% of cases was below 5th percentile. Sixty six percent of cases, their body mass index were below 5th percentile. Conclusion: Most Iraqi diabetic children had similar picture of epidemiological and clinical presentation to that of diabetic children in other countries, although there were some difference between them.
