ABSTRACT
The present study deals with the pharmacognostic and phytochemical studies of heartwood of Thespesia Populnea Linn. The objective of the present work comprise of collection, identification, microscopical and phytochemical evaluation of heartwood of Thespesia Populnea Linn. Pharmacognosy of root, leaf and bark of Thespesia populnea were reported, but was not available for heartwood. Considering these, detailed investigation of powdered heartwood of T. populnea has been carried out using Macroscopy, Microscopy and phytochemical parameters. The sections were taken and cellular structures were studied. The microscopical study of heartwood shows the presence of pores or vessels, xylem fibers, axial parenchyma and xylem rays. The
preliminary phytochemical studies indicate the presence of Carbohydrates, tannins, alkaloids flavonoids, triterpenes, steroids, saponins and glycosides. The parameters like Total Ash Value, Water soluble ash, acid insoluble ash value and extractive value, loss on drying and foreign organic matter were also studied.
