ABSTRACT
Objective: The study aims to evaluate the anti inflammatory activity of an Ayurvedic formulation-Intuppukana Churna. Further the activity was compared with the aniti inflammatory potential of individual raw dugs used in the formulation to find out the ingredient responsible for the activity. Methods: By using the shade dried herbal drugs mentioned in ayurvedic formulary of India, the formulation Intuppukana churna was prepared. The methanolic (80%) extracts of formulation and the individual drugs of the formulation were prepared by sonication in ultrasonic water bath for 30 minute. Then the solutions
were filtered through the Whatman filter paper No.41. The extraction by sonication was performed three times successively and the extracts were combined and concentrated under reduced pressure. The acute toxicity studies were conducted as per OECD guideline for all the prepared extracts and prepared formulation. The anti inflammatory activity was assessed by using carrageenan induced rat paw edema. The activity of formulation and the individual ingredients of the formulations were compared. Observation: Intuppukana churna and its ingredient found to be safe up to 2000mg/kg. Churna possesses good anti inflammatory activity as compared to that of individual ingredients from the formulation. This supports the concept of synergism mentioned in ayurvedic texts.
