ABSTRACT
the dried stem bark of aphanamixis polystachya (wall)parker was
successive extracted with petroleum ether, chloroform, methanol
solvents for 48 hours in soxhlet apparatus and solvents from extracts
was evaporated under vacuum. all three extracts were subjected to
phytochemical investigation and HPLC analysis. these herbal plants
have the phyto constituents such as phenyl compounds, coumarins,
essential oils, terpenoids, monoterpenoids, diterpenoids, triterpenoids,
steroids, alkaloids and other nitrogenous compounds. the plant taken
for this study is aphanamixis polystachya (wall) parker. it is called
rohituka in sanskrit, malampuluvan in tamil. this plant belongs to
meliaceae family. this plant is used for liver disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, leucorrhoea and
anthelmintic ulcers, anticancer.this paper shows that high performance liquid chromatography
(hplc) is a suitable analytical method for determining beta sitosterol and stigmasterol in nhexane
fraction of aphanamixis polystachya(wall) parker stem bark methanolic extract.std
beta sitosterol and stigmasterol showed retension time 6.12 and 11.05 min repectively,90%
acetonitrile and 10% water the retension time of n-hexane fraction of methanolic extract of
plant 6.16 , and 11.03 min repectively.
Keywords: beta sitosterol , stigma sterol, HPLC.
