ABSTRACT
Introduction: Corticosteroids are recognized as one of the preferred treatment options for shortness of breath. Although the efficacy of corticosteroids is significant for this condition, its long-term use may lead to side effects such as gastrointestinal ulcers, diabetes, and hypertension. In addition to these common side effects, abnormal uterine bleeding may also rarely develop with corticosteroid treatment in some patients. Hence follow up is important to classify patients with persistent bleeding. Presentation of case: 25-years old female patient presented with a case of abnormal uterine bleeding due to dexamethasone, the co-administered drugs were cefotaxime, ranitidine, paracetamol, cetirizine, and gentamicin and vitamin b.complex supplements. Due to the withdrawal of dexamethasone and by initiating treatment she recovered within a day and she was discharged.
Conclusion: the past medication history of the patient who was treated with dexamethasone and continued with the same drug for shortness of breath revealed occurrence of abnormal uterine bleeding which was controlled by withdrawal of the drug from the medication plan. Therefore, monitoring for abnormal uterine bleeding should be done whilst using corticosteroids for conditions such as shortness of breath.
