ABSTRACT
Many plants are capable of synthesizing bioactive compounds that can be used by plants for defence against pathogens and some of these compounds have been useful for drug discovery. Acetone, ethanol and methanol extracts of leaves, stems and roots were obtained from medicinal plants Justicia adhatoda and Vitex negundo. All the plant extracts were assessed for antibacterial activity against four pathogenic bacterial strains - MRSA, Pseudomonas sp, Klebsiella sp. and E. coli. Leaf and stem extracts were effective in inhibiting the growth of the test bacteria however Pseudomonas showed resistance to root extract. The antioxidant property of the plant extract(s) was further evaluated for free radical scavenging activity. Maximum antioxidant activity
observed was 63.63μg/ml. The potential anti-diabetic properties of the phytochemical extracts were also determined.
