REVIEW ON BOUGAINVILLEA SPECTABILIS - A TRADITIONAL MEDICINAL PLANT

ABSTRACT

Bougainvillea spectabilis is reported to have medicinal properties such as anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-hepatotoxic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antihyperlipidemic, antioxidant, and antiulcer. The phytoconstituents such as alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, phenolics, phlobotannins, quinones, saponins, tannins and terpenoids were reported as the basis of therapeutic properties. The other important constituents of Bougainvillea spectabilis have medicinal properties are bougainvinones, pinitol, quercetagetin, quercetin and terpinolene. All the information about B. specabilis given in article was gathered by the use of different sources. The review article has attempted to suggest B. spectabilis to be one of the choices in the traditional medicinal plants.
