ABSTRACT
It is concluded that propolis has a protective effect on liver and kidney functions and it was evaluated by measuring liver and kidney enzymes and through histopatholg- ical examination of liver and kidney tissues. Seventy two male Wister albino rats were randomly divided into main eight groups including:- Group (1): control (propylene glycol 0.4 ml orally all the period of experiment. Group (2): propolis which was suspended into propylene glycol at a concentraion of 10% in a dose of 200 mg/ kg body weight orally for 15 days. Group (3): fresh mixture of carbon tetrachloride (CCL4) 25% and corn oil (1:3) intraperitoneally in a dose of 2.5 ml/ kg body weight twice weekly for three succeccive weeks to induce liver injury; Group (4): propolis was given at 200 mg/ kg body weight orally for 15 days followed by intraperitoneal injection
of carbon tetrachloride (CCL4) twice weekly for three weeks; Group (5): Silymarin (Hepaticum) ® was administrated orally in a dose of 50 mg / kg b.wt. daily for 15 days followed by intraperitoneal injection of carbon tetrachloride in a dose of 2.5 ml/ kg b.wt. twice weekly for 3 weeks. Group (6): vancomycin was administrated intraperitoneally in a dose of 200 mg /kg b.wt. daily for 7 days for induction of renal toxicity. Group (7): propolis was given at 200 mg/ kg body weight orally for 15 days followed by intraperitoneal injection of vancomycin in a dose of 200 mg /kg b.wt. daily for 7 days; Group (8): curcummin extract orally in a dose of 200 mg/kg b.wt daily for 15 days followed by intraperitoneal injection of vancomycin in a dose of 200 mg / kg body weight daily for 7 days. The findings revealed that there was a significant increase in liver and kidney enzymes in rats treated with carbon tetrachloride and vacomycin There was a significant decrease in liver enzymes in group treated with propolis with carbon tetrachloride and there was and there was improvement of histopathological study compared to carbon tetrachloride group. Also results showed significant decrease in kidney enzymes in group treated with propolis with vancomycin and there was improvement in renal tissue compared to vancomycin group. Its concluded that oral administration of propolis at 200 mg / kg body weight showed a significant improvement in elevated liver and kidney enzymes caused by carbon tetrachloride and vancomycin.
