ABSTRACT
Saponins are natural glycoside compounds that exhibit structuredependent
biological activities. Present study was undertaken to
evaluate the saponins from Sesbania sesban leaf, at a dose of
100mg/kg and 200mg/kg, for possible antifertility activity in female
albino rats of normal estrus cycle. The animals were observed for its
effect on estrous cycle, implantation and further on abortive activity.
The vaginal cornification & uterine weight assay was carried to
determine the estrogenic activity of the saponin extract. Saponins from
the leaves of Sesbania sesban showed highly significant dose
dependent anti-implantation (56% & 86%) and abortifacient (75% and
92%) activity at both 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg (P
