Abstract

HIGH FUNCTIONALITY COPROCESSED EXCIPIENTS: A REVIEW

Maulin A. Patel*, Prashant L. Pingale

ABSTRACT

Direct Compression is becoming a preferred manufacturing process in order to speed up the manufacturing and reduce costs. Although a major requirement for direct compression process is selection of excipients with the optimum physical characteristics that increase final flowability and compressibility of the ready for compression (RFC) tableting blend. Various excipient suppliers’ offer innovative excipients and excipient composites with novel preparation and processing techniques which enable the development of directly compressible solid oral dosage forms with enhanced efficiency with or without reducing the cost of drugs. Innovative excipient composites are being engineered to achieve the properties of key parts of the tableting blend in a single, highly flowable and compressible granular material. By using combinations of excipients and novel processing techniques, particles / excipients can be engineered to deliver desired properties to be used in direct compression. The resulting engineered excipients are commonly known as “coprocessed,” “high functionality,” “multifunctional,” “high functionality,” “performance” excipients. Examples of such high functionality coprocessed excipients, according to the material used as diluent are discussed in present article. Evaluation tests commonly employed for the same have been also discussed in the article.

Keywords: Co-processed excipients, High-functionality excipients, Perfomance excipients, MCC, Lactose based high functionality number
