ABSTRACT
Background: Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic systemic
inflammatory disease that is associated with the long term disability
and premature mortality. Although a number of drugs (non-steroidal
or steroidal anti-inflammatory agents and immunosuppressants) used
in the treatment of RA, there is still an urgent need for more effective
drugs with lower side effects. The acute stage of arthritis is
characterized by signs of lack of mobility and pause in body weight
gain.
Findings: A polyherbal formulation(Rheumatone) was made using
five medicinal plants namely Clitorea ternatea, Sida cordifolia,
Cleodendron serratum, Bacopa monnieri, Cardiospermum
halicacabum. There is a significant reduction (p<0.001) in the levels
of Super oxide dismutase(SOD), Catalase, Peroxidase and Glutathione
peroxidase(GPx) in the liver and kidney of adjuvant induced arthritic
rats and there is an elevated level of SOD, Catalase, Peroxidase (p<
0.001) noted in the Liver and Kidney of rats that were treated with the polyherbal
formulation Rheumatone compared with the toxic rats. There is a signiciant increase of
GPx(p< 0.01) in Liver and Kidney of rats treated with Rheumatone compared with Group II
rats treated with Freund’s Complete Adjuvant (FCA).
Conclusions: The study confirms that the polyerbal formulation Rheumatone made from
Clitorea ternatea, Sida cordifolia, Cleodendron serratum, Bacopa monnieri, Cardiospermum
halicacabum does not exhibit any side effects and it has the enzymatic antioxidant activity.
