Amit Gupta* and Vipin Chandra pal

ABSTRACT

Present research work was performed to evaluate the Memory enhancing activity of aqueous fruit extract of Terminalia chebula in rats. Memory enhancing activity of the Terminalia chebula was compared with piracetam. Behavioral abnormalities was studied in rats by using head dip chamber and Morris water maze. Rats of either sex were divided into 12 groups of 6 animals in each group. First six group of animal selected for the head dip chamber test. During this test solution was freshly prepared and administered in rats for 7th day, 15th day and 30th days. In head dip chamber, Group were Distilled water, Normal saline, piracetam (10mg/kg i.p.), Terminalia chebula (20mg/kg, p.o.), Terminalia chebula (40mg/kg, p.o.), and piracetam + effective dose of Terminalia chebula (40mg/kg, p.o.). Another Six groups of animal selected same as group for the Morris water test. During this test solution was freshly prepared daily and administered in the rat for 7 days. On 7th day, 15th day and 30th day, each animal was checked to memory enhancing activity by using Head dip test. This result showed that Terminalia chebula (40mg/kg, p.o.) was significantly decrease number of head dipping in head dip apparatus. Terminalia chebula (40mg/kg, p.o.) was decrease in escape latency time to reach platform of Morris water maze test conduct on 1st day, 2nd day, 3rd day, 4th day and 5th day. Terminalia chebula (40mg/kg, p.o.) group give increase the retention times of target quadrant (Q3) of Morris water apparatus during 6th day. Terminalia chebula (40mg/kg, p.o.) administered group give increase the retention times of target quadrant (Q3) of Morris water apparatus during 7th day. Terminalia chebula (40mg/kg) is less potent than Piracetam. Terminalia chebula (40mg/kg) with Piracetam give synergetic nootropic activity in rats.

Keywords: Morris water maze, Head dip chamber Terminalia chebula, Nootropic activity, Piracetam, Harad.
