Abstract

PELLETS AND PELLETIZATION: REVIEW

Rashmitha N. M.*, C. N. Somashekhar, T. Tamizh Mani

ABSTRACT

Pellets are small free flowing; spherical particulates. In pharmaceutical industries, pellets are multiparticulate dosage form manufactured by the agglomeration of fine powder or granules. Different types of techniques used to produce pellets are referred to as pelletization techniques. In relation to pharmaceuticals, pellets offer high degree of flexibility in design and development of oral dosage form. These pelletized dosage forms have gained popularity considerably from then because of their distinct advantages, such as ease of capsule filling because of better flow properties of the perfectly spherical pellets; enhancement of drug dissolution; ease of coating; sustained, controlled, or site-specific delivery of the drug from coated pellets; uniform packing; even distribution in the GI tract; and less GI irritation. Pellets are typically varied between 500-1500μm in size for pharmaceutical applications. This review will provides an insight into previous studies on pelletization techniques, investigation of various pelletization techniques namely: layering, extrusion-spheronization, cryopelletization, hot melt extrusion. It also gives a brief idea about the evaluation of pellets and application of pellets.

Keywords: Pellets, pelletization, Novel drug delivery, Formulation, Evaluation, Application.
