MICROSPONGES: A REVIEW ON ITS EFFECTIVE TOPICAL APPLICATION

Disha Dutta*, Naveen Goyal and Dinesh Kumar Sharma

ABSTRACT

For topical application against various skin ailments many conventional as well as novel carrier systems are available. Microsponge technology is one of the recent advances as novel carrier. Microsponges composed of porous microscopic spheres made up of polymer, they are extremely small, inert, indestructible spheres. They look like very small spherical particles that consist of a hundreds of interconnecting voids, it is a non-collapsible sponge like structure. Its size ranges from 5-300μm in diameter and all most pores250000 in atypical 25μm sphere. So far MDDS have shown applications in many fields apart from topical uses like in oral drug Delivery system, in colon targeting, bone substitutes, biopharmaceutical delivery as well as tissue engineering, diagnosis of diseases and RNA silencing but it is widely used for topical drug delivery system. Its topical applications are sunscreen, anti-acne, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-dandruff, antipruritic, skin depigmenting, rubefacient etc. The drug is released into the skin by different triggers like rubbing and temperature higher than skin temperature. In comparison to other topical formulation microsponges inhibit excessive accumulation of drugs as well as excipients within the layers of skin. Microsponges have better physical, thermal, and chemical stability. They can further be formulated into other convenient formulations like gel, lotion etc. Bioavailability of drug is also improved. The drugs which have been explored in microsponge delivery system are ibuprofen, benzoylperoxide, mupirocin, ketoconazole, ketoprofen, erythromycin, diclofenac, oxybenzone etc. The topical MDDS can be utilized in three primary ways: first as depot releasing active ingredients over an extended time period, secondly excess skin oils can be absorbed and third can act as a closed containers for holding ingredients to depart from the skin. Coloured cosmetics like lipstick, eye shadows, powder can also be formulated as MDDS etc. Comprehensive study of various novel approaches of microsponges is the main purpose of this review.

Keywords: MDDS: Microsponges Drug Delivery System, TDDS: Transdermal Drug Delivery System.
