Abstract

SPHERICAL CRYSTALLIZATION: A NOVEL TECHNIQUE IN DRUG PARTICLE DESIGNING

Swapna Velivela*, Nikunja B. Pati, V. Ramamohan Gupta

ABSTRACT

Spherical agglomeration is a modern technique where the drug crystals are converted to spherical form to improve compressibility, flowability and packability for the development of directly compressible pharmaceutical dosage forms. The spherical crystallization further developed to enhance dissolution rate characteristics of poorly water soluble drugs with use hydrophilic polymers. The principle steps involved in the process of spherical crystallization are flocculation zone, zero growth zone, fast growth zone and constant size zone. General methods of spherical crystallization are Spherical agglomeration (SA), Quasi Emulsion solvent diffusion (QESD/ Transient Emulsion), Ammonia diffusion method (ADM), Neutralization technique (NT), Traditional Crystallization Process and Crystal-co-agglomeration Technique (CCA). Spherical crystals are characterized by Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XPRD), Electron scanning microscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) and Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) etc.

Keywords: Spherical crystallization, Spherical Agglomeration, emulsion solvent diffusion, ammonia diffusion method, X-ray powder diffraction (XPRD).
