ABSTRACT
Sleep is a naturally recurring state of mind and body characterized by altered consciousness, relatively inhibited sensory activity, inhibition of nearly all voluntary muscles, and reduced interactions with surroundings. However, there are 81 sleep disorders classified by International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD). The 8 major categories of sleep disorders include insomnias, sleep-related breathing disorders, hypersomnias of central origin, circadian rhythm sleep disorders, parasomnias, sleep-related movement disorders, isolated symptoms or apparently normal variants and unresolved issues and the last category being other sleep disorders. However, the treatment of all these sleep disorders vary by leaps and bounds. In this review, we discuss the pharmacotherapy of the sleep disorders and mention the
main features of the drugs involved in management of these disorders.
