Abstract

NEUROPHARMACOLOGICAL SCREENINGS OF HYDROALCOHOLIC FRACTIONS OF URENA LOBATA L.

ABSTRACT

Effects of hydro-methanolic fractions of Urena lobata L. on some neuropharmacological activities were studied in Swiss mice. The methanolic fraction in dose (400 mg/kg) was found to produce a profound decrease in exploratory activity and number of swings. Methanol fraction also showed a marked sedative effect as evidenced by a significant reduction in gross behaviour and potentiation of pentobarbitone-induced sleeping time. It produced onset of sleep by 8.2Â±0.82 minutes when compared to the standard, diazepam by 2.4Â±0.57 minutes. The chloroform and hydro-methanol fractions also produced significant sedative activities. The totality of these effects showed that the extracts possess depressant action on the central nervous system.
