DIABETIS, A SILENT KILLER: A SURVEY

ABSTRACT
Objective of survey is to evaluate drug utilization pattern of oral hypoglycaemic agents in diabetic outpatients. A prospective study was carried out in 100 out-patients for a period of 6 months in a periphery. Patient treated with oral hypoglycaemic agents were used for the study. The demographic data and utilization of different classes of oral hypoglycaemic agents as well as individual drug were analysed. The study found 94% patients were suffering from type-2nd diabetes and 6% of type-1st diabetes the study found that 73% patients were males. The greatest numbers of patients (31%) were in the age group of50-60years.Biguanides was the most common class of drug used and also Bigunides and Sulfonyl chloride urea were commonly used, among the
various oral antidiebetics prescribed. This study found that the greatest numbers of patients are having fasting in sugar level 100-150 mg/dl. Glipizide, Metformin, Glimepiride and Metformin combination drugs were the most commonly used drugs. Overall polypharmacy was high even though polypharmacy among ant diabetic drugs were low.
