Abstract

ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITIES (ANTIBACTERIAL AND ANTIFUNGAL) EFFECT OF PANCHAGAVYA ALONE PREPARED BY FERMENTATION METHOD

ABSTRACT

Number of animal derivatives resources were reported to have antimicrobial activity. The current study narrated to such valuable, holy and blessed mammal resulting material Panchagavya. When literally translated from sanskrit, “Pancha” means Five and “Gavya” means substance or ingredient. In general, the term PG (Panchagavya) is used to signify the blend of five ingredients obtained from the cow namely urine, dung, milk, ghee (clarified butter) and curd. Ayurveda has mentioned that the five individual constituents of PG possess medicinal properties and can be used singly or in combination for treatment of different human ailments[3]. In the present study, Panchagavya prepared by fermentation is used for its antibacterial and antifungal efficacy testing by agar well method using bacterial species like Escherichia coli (ATCC 10148), salmonella typhi (NCTC 786), Shigella Flexneri (Clinical isolate), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Fisher’s Immunotype IV) and fungal species like Candida albicans (ATCC 10231), Aspergillus niger (ATCC 16404), Aspergillus flavus (Clinical isolate), Trichophyton mentagrophyte(Soil isolate) and Alternaria soloni. Many references are available regarding antimicrobial efficacy testing of panchagavya in combination with some herbal extract and in such studies worker have used only one or two of the ingredient out five excretory product of cow and its combination with one or more herbal extract and they have named such formulation as Panchagavya. But in present study we have used only Panchagavya alone method and we have tried to prove the antibacterial and antifungal efficiency of individual Panchagavya prepared by fermentation against various types of bacterial and fungal species. The results indicate that the Panchagavya alone prepared by fermentation method has significant antibacterial and antifungal activities against various types of microbial species.
