EVALUATION OF ANTI-ARTHRITIC ACTIVITY OF SEED OIL OF VATERIA INDICA AGAINST CFA INDUCED ARTHRITIS IN RATS

ABSTRACT

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disorder that preferentially affects the synovial membranes of joints and eventually leads to bone and cartilage destruction. The objective of this study is to evaluate the anti-arthritic activity of the seed oil of Vateria indica against complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA) induced arthritis in rats. Acute toxicity studies were followed as per OECD guidelines 425. Wistar albino rats (150–200g) of either sex were used for the experiment. Adjuvant induced anti-arthritic activity was done by using prophylactic model and therapeutic model. Arthritis was induced by single sub plantar injection of 0.1ml of complete Freund’s adjuvant. The anti-arthritic effect of the seed oil was compared with standard drug Diclofenac (50mg/kg, p.o) in both the models. Physical parameters such as paw volume, paw diameter and body weight, serum parameters such as SGOT, SGPT, ALP and RF were evaluated. It was observed in both the models that the low dose (200mg/kg, p.o) and high dose (400mg/kg, p.o) of Vateria indica seed oil showed dose dependent significant decrease in SGOT, SGPT and ALP, paw volume, paw diameter and increase in body weight when compared to arthritic control group. All treated animals showed significant decrease in serum rheumatoid factor. From the present data, it concludes that Vateria indica seed oil possesses significant anti-arthritic activity.
