*Dr. K. Saraswathi Gopal, Dr. Nandhini Ganesan and Dr. B. G. Harsha Vardhan

ABSTRACT

The osteomas are benign rare neoplasms, generally asymptomatic which are characterized by the proliferation of a compact or spongy bone.[1,2] When they are situated in the maxillofacial area, they affect mainly the mandible, the frontal bone and the paranasal sinus.[3,4] Osteoma is a benign, bone forming tumors located within bones or developing on them as a bony outgrowth of membranous bones, found mostly on skull and facial bones.[5] It is distinguished from common palatal and mandibular tori and buccal exostosis which are thought to be developmental or reactive origin in spite of being similar to osteomas histopathologically hence not believed to be true neoplasm. Osteoma arises from surface of the bone (periosteal) or located in the medullary bone (Endosteal) as a polypoid or sessile mass.[1] We present a case of 38yr old female presented with bony swelling in right posterior mandibular region.

Keywords: Osteoma, compact bone, spongy bone.
