Abstract

NANOEMULSIONS:FORMULATION METHODS AND STABILITY ASPECTS

Sonal Setya*, Sushama Talegaonkar, Dr B.K.Razdan

ABSTRACT

Kinetically stable, isotropic nanoemulsions with mean droplet size less than 300 nm have gained a lot of attention in varied fieldsduring the past few decades.Nanoemulsions may remain stable for few hours to years depending upon the components used and process involved. They do not suffer from problems such as creaming, sedimentation and flocculation.Destabilization(irreversible in nature) in nanoemulsions occurs because of change in the droplet sizeby coalescence and Ostwald ripening.Microemulsions, on the other hand arethermodynamically stable because of very low interfacialtension and free energy of formation. This article explains the mechanism, components required, low and high energy processes involved in the preparation of nanoemulsions. It also summarizes their difference from microemulsions.Instability in nanoemulsions hampers its viability for commercialization. This review sheds light on the main instabilityproblems innanoemulsions by coalescence and Ostwald ripeningalong with ways to prevent and reduce them.

Keywords: nanoemulsions,microemulsions,formation,instability,coalescence,Ostwald ripening.
