Abstract

ANTI-HYPERLIPIDAEMIC EFFECT OF BOMBAX CEIBA BARK AND SEEDS POWDER ON ALBINO WISTAR RATS

ABSTRACT

Objective: The present study was aimed to investigate the antihyperlipidaemic activity of Bombax ceiba bark and seeds powder on high fat high cholesterol (HFHC) fed rats group. Methods: Male Albino Wistar rats were fed by HFHC diet to create hyperlipidaemic condition in them. The rats were fed by Bombax ceiba bark and seeds powder at 200mg/kg body weight of rats. The effect of both the powders on serum and tissue lipid profile was determined, including albumin, protein, phospholipid, free fatty acid, triglycerides and total cholesterol (HDL-C and LDL-C) levels was studied. In addition, body weight changes, organs weight, relative liver size and food consumption were also evaluated in HFHC diet fed rats. Results: Supplementation of bark and seeds powder of Bombax ceiba showed the significant reduction in serum and tissue phospholipid, free fatty acid, triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-C levels and increases the protein, albumin, HDL—C level as well in experimental groups as compare to HFHC fed group. There was a significant elevation in the value of phospholipids, free fatty acid, triglycerides, LDL-C, total cholesterol and decrease in albumin, protein, HDL-C in HFHC fed rats groups. Hence, the results justify that Bombax ceiba possess anti-hyperlipidaemic activity. Conclusion: Bombax ceiba bark and seeds powder is an effective alternative for the treatment of hyperlipidaemia as it reduces the lipid level in serum as well as in tissues.
