ABSTRACT

To study In vitro antioxidant activity of stem bark of Caesalpinia pulcherrima L. and also to determine the potency of the various concentrations of the drug & to compare the results with the standard drug. Oxidation is one of the destructive process, where it breaks down and damages various molecules responsible to produce free radicals and these are also generated in several biochemical reactions in the body, which have been implicated as mediators of many diseases, including cancer, atherosclerosis and heart diseases. In the present work phytochemical evaluation and physicochemical investigation has been carried out. Antioxidants phytochemical from the plants exert their effect by neutralizing these highly reactive radicals. Among the ten thousands of phytochemicals found in our diets or traditional medicines, polyphenols and carotenoids stand out as the two most important groups of natural antioxidants. Caesalpinia pulcherrima L. belonging to family Caesalpiniaceae commonly known as red bird of paradise is a medicinal herb used in the treatment of various diseases. The preliminary phytochemical investigation of hydroalcoholic extract of Caesalpinia pulcherrima L. showed the presences of phenol, sterol and flavonoids, which possesses antioxidant activity. The total antioxidant capacity and the reducing power assay of the extract show significant antioxidant activity.

Keywords: Antioxidant, Phenol, Sterol and Flavonoids, Caesalpinia pulcherrima L.
