ABSTRACT

Nanotechnology has emerged as an exciting approach in the drug development process and among the various metal nanoparticles silver nanoparticles have been explored for its variety of medical applications. Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles is an eco-friendly and cost effective method for the development of silver nanoparticles. In our laboratory, a fast and eco-friendly synthetic method of biogenic silver nanoparticles (AOAgNPs) using Anacardium occidentale leaf aqueous extract was developed and the characterization of AOAgNPs was done. In this present study, in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of AOAgNPs was evaluatedin terms of human red blood cell stabilization, inhibition of protein denaturation, proteinase inhibitory activity and lipoxygenase inhibitory action. To study the in vivo anti-inflammatory activity, carrageenan was administered to mice to induce paw edema as acute inflammation. It was observed that AOAgNPs
reduced the edema in the paw tissues early after the induction of inflammation. From the above findings, it can be concluded that AOAgNPs exhibited potent in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory activity and could be successfully used as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of inflammation.

Keywords: Anti-inflammatory activity, AOAgNPs, Carrageenan, Human red blood cell stabilization activity, Lipoxygenase inhibitory action, Paw edema.
