ABSTRACT
Thyroid cancer is the most common among all endocrine malignancies.
The world prevalance of goitre in the general population is estimated at
4-7%. It is postulated that goitrous thyroid is a precursor lesion to the
development of malignant disease, the incidence of malignancy in
goitrous thyroid is about 10%.Thyroid malignancy is usually more
common in females ,with a male to female ratio ranging between 2:1 to
5:1 in most populations. Thyroid malignancy usually occurs at an
earlier age group. This study was hospital based retrospective study
based on the collection of the surgically removed thyroid specimens
from J.L.N Hospital, Ajmer. Cases were divided into two groups
cancer and non cancer groups, based on histopathological intervention
in J.L.N Hospital were collected. Of these 22(16.5%) were males and 111(83.5%) were
females. The highest prevalence of thyroid swelling was in 31-40 year age group. The cases
were in 8 to 78 year age range. Out of 133 thyroid swellings 25(18.8%) were found to be
malignant whereas the rest 108(81.2%) were non malignant. Based on our study goitrous
swelling is common in Ajmer region, however thyroid malignancy is not a major problem.
The most common thyroid cancer is papillary carcinoma, more prevalent in females.
