ABSTRACT

Siddha system of medicine is one of the oldest traditional healing therapies known to the mankind since several centuries. It has numerous novel polyherbal formulations which benefit the society for various ailments. Major formulations used in Siddha are based on herbs and minerals. Traditional healing system around the world that utilizes herbal remedies is an important resource for the discovery of modern drugs. In the process of drug discovery the current strategy upon which the scientist relies on the alternate source is from natural origin. Due to prevailing side effect on regular usage of allopathic medicine, people of developing countries started migrating towards the traditional healing therapy like siddha. Seenthilkudineer is a traditional siddha formulation which consists of 6 major herbs such as Tinospora cordifolia, Araca catechu,Operculina terpethum, Terminalia chebula, Zingiber officinalis, Picrorhiza scrophulariflora and Aloe barbadence. The main objective of the present investigation is to carry out the physicochemical evaluation of the trial drug Seenthil kudineer and to document the evidence based results of the same. Results of the study reveal that loss on drying at 105oC of SK was found to be 10.27 %w/w. Total ash value of SK was 4.92 %w/w. In which acid insoluble ash value of was found to be 0.53 %w/w. Water Soluble Extractive value of SK was found to be 20.55 %w/w. Similarly alcohol soluble extractive value was 15.20 % w/w. pH of the formulation SK was found to be 4.70.Further the formulation SK shown the presence of radicals such as sulphate, aluminium, zinc, calcium, magnesium and phytocomponents like alkaloid, Phenol, cresol and hydroquinone. From the results of the present investigation it was evident that the formulation SK complies with the standards recommended by the AYUSH and also possesses significant functional group and phytocomponents which may responsible for versatile therapeutic action against dreadful disease upon clinical usage.
